MSU Researcher Selected For Antarctica Expedition: Baroda’s Dr. N Sharma, a senior lecturer at MS University’s department of geology, will be a member of the 15-member 21st Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (an annual feature organised by the National Centre for Antarctic & Ocean Research of India’s department oceanography). His research proposal – ‘Surface isotopic variation and mixing in fresh snow on Antarctica’ – has been accepted for this purpose. India has a permanent station in Antarctica where expedition teams stay. Besides having the research qualifications, expedition members must pass rigorous medical check-ups and go through a conditioning camp in Himalayan glaciers conducted by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Swimming Pool: The Sardarbaug swimming pool, run by Vadodara Municipal Corporation, will be closed for a month from 2nd January for repairs and maintenance.

US Visa Service In Ahmedabad: A US Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) centre has been opened at Ahmedabad where visa aspirants from Gujarat can submit their applications, pay the visa fees and complete pre-scrutiny formalities. This centre will not be involved in the adjudication process, that is, deciding whether to issue a visa or not. The VFS in Ahmedabad has been started to offload some of the work at the Mumbai Consulate, which received 160,000 applications this year from western India, a third of them from Gujarat.

Owners of newly purchased vehicles can get their desired number under the new series by applying for a particular number of their choice. The applications for the desired registration numbers can be submitted on January 8. If there is more than one claimant for the same number, the highest bidder will win.

STD Rates Slashed: Effective January 14, 2002m India’s long-distance telephone (STD) rates will be slashed by more than 60 %. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) will lose about Rs. 30,000 million over 6 months, but it should emerge as a net revenue earner with the resulting substantial traffic increase of about 70 %. There will be only two time slabs (9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.) and only three distances slabs (50 to 200 km, 200 to 500 km and 500 km and above). This is perhaps the steepest slash in the STD rates. BSNL has about 30 million subscribers.

50 km – 200 km Rs. 2.40 per minute Rs. 1.20 per minute

The Zoo Story: Na ghar ka, na ghat ka! This is the sad story of one of Vadodara’s major attractions, the Sayajibaug Zoo. It cannot stay where it is because the Central Zoo Authority has opined quite rightly that it is too cramped. The municipal corporation decided to shift the zoo to more spacious premises at Ajwa, close to Sayaji Sarovar, 20 km from the city. Then there was the breach in the wall of the Pratappura Lake near Asoj in July that led to the inundation of three nearby villages. Officials are now afraid that a similar accident at the Sayaji Sarovar may cause a lot of harm to the zoo’s animals and visitors if the zoo were to be shifted to Ajwa. The shifting plan needs to be looked at again. Until then, the zoo is in the same tight spot.

Quiet Wednesday: Gujarat’s telecommunication and internet facilities including those in Vadodara were severely disrupted on Wednesday, 26th December due to major faults in the western sector of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s national network. The faults were in the Bilimora-Valsad section in Gujarat and around Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The culprit: careless road workers who may have unknowingly dug into optical fibre lines, or carefree rodents reclaiming their rights of way. Whatever be the cause, it doesn’t seem to take a lot of doing to close down the information highway.

Star TV Boycotted: Star TV and the city’s cable operators are having a little fight over the former’s jacked-up rates, and the latter have boycotted Star programmes. Last year, Star charged Rs. 18.50 per connection, which was later increased by Rs. 10, and now it seems that the operators are being asked to pay Rs. 40 per connection. The boycott bandwagon has been joined by Maruti Cables (Karelibaug), JVRD (Manjalpur), UDT (Waghodia-Ajwa), Shree Krishna Cables (Warasia), Sky Cable (Race Course-Gotri), United Cables (Tarsali), Niraj Cable (Ajwa), City Cables (Sayajigunj) and Akash Ganga (City).

Female Foeticide In Baroda: Sahiyar & Women’s Study Research Centre recently studied the falling sex ratio in Baroda. The findings are not very comforting, unless one happens to be in favour of female foeticide. In 1985-86, 922 more boys were born in comparison to girls; in 1998-99, this figure was 2,208. The cause is quite clearly sex determination tests and the subsequent abortions if the child is expected to be female. Of the 70 women covered by the study, 16 had the test done, 9 found that the child was male and one of them opted for an abortion, while all the 7 who found that it was female opted for abortion. Irrespective of the income group, the male child is preferred.

Births In Vadodara
Year Male Female No. of girls lesser than boys Sex ratio
1985-86 11,072 10,150 922 916
1990-91 10,886 9,501 1,385 872
1995-96 11,432 9,656 1,776 844
1996-97 11,723 9,397 2,326 801
1997-98 12,141 10,056 2,085 828
1998-99 11,576 9,368 2,208 809

The District Votes: Over 72 % (74.69 % of the males and 70 % of the females) cast their votes in the Vadodara district Gram Panchayat elections on 23rd December. The highest polling was in Karjan (84.55 %), followed by Shinor (79.07 %), Savli (76 %) and Dabhoi (75 %). The lowest (64 %) was recorded in Vadodara (City). Vadodara (Rural) was better (74 %).

Medical Tourists In Baroda: Baroda’s dentists and plastic surgeons are quite pleased with what is loosely termed ‘Medical Tourism’. The vast difference in treatment costs between USA and India ensures that Indians head home for minor medical complaints that cost major dollars, and the facilities here are perfectly acceptable. Besides, areas such as plastic surgery and aesthetic dentistry are not usually covered by insurance companies abroad.

Treatment In Vadodara In USA
Tooth Replacement Rs. 100 $ 100
Wiring (Teeth) Rs. 10,000 $ 8,000
Tooth Implant Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 $ 20,000
Cosmetic Surgery Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000 $ 25,000

Phone Tapping: Tapping telephones, mobile phones, e-mail and other modes of communication may become legitimate for the state government once the draft Gujarat Control of Organised Crime Bill, 2001, approved recently by the state cabinet, comes into effect. Originally from a village in the Anjar District of Kutch, she came to Goraj village near Waghodia, in 1978, at the age of 35. Goraj then was a more or less barren area and Anuben built her seva ashram there in determined bits and pieces. The ashram’s modern hospital caters to the people of over 100 villages in the vicinity. The needy are provided subsidised or free medical treatment. The ashram houses the Arogya Mandir, a school, a creche, a home for the elderly, a home for mentally retarded women, ‘Gau Mandir’ and a vocational training centre. It is a hub of welfare activities where the needy find work and food. The Rs. 500 million super speciality Kailash Cancer Hospital is fast nearing completion. The institutions are spread over an area of more than 15 acres and employ a staff of 210. Anuben had a remarkable ability to promote the ashram’s activities in India and abroad.
