Some Rain At Last: The elements turned merciful
on Monday and released some welcome rain for a city that was heading towards a
major water crisis. In a much delayed second monsoon phase after a long, hot,
humid, dry and worrying spell, Baroda received over 35 mm of rain. The mercury
relaxed a bit too, dropping 4 degrees C. The rain was certainly not enough for
people to start singing again, but it helped to pep up the sagging mood of the
city.

Water
Crisis Grips City: Barodians are not strangers to water cuts; they have
been living with them for some time now. But the worst may not be over. If the
dry spell continues much longer and it does not rain before August 15, then the
Vadodara Municipal Corporation may be unable to supply water for even half an
hour each day. The city has not faced such a problem earlier. Baroda needs 50
million gallons of water daily. The water comes mainly from the Ajwa Lake and
the Mahi river. The level of Ajwa is down to 202.8 feet and it is expected to
reduce further by the end of August. The comfortable level of Ajwa is 211 feet.
